In 2020, humans have been replaced by robots in boxing. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a former boxer who owns such a robot, named ‘Ambush‘; which, by its destruction at the behest of promoter Ricky (Kevin Durand), incurs a heavy debt. Soon afterward, Charlie hears that his ex-girlfriend has died, and that he must attend a hearing to decide the fate of their son Max (Dakota Goyo). Max’s aunt Debra (Hope Davis) and uncle Marvin (James Rebhorn) request full custody, which Charlie concedes on the condition that Charlie retain Max for three months. Moments after acquiring Max, Charlie purchases a secondhand fighting robot ‘Noisy Boy’, and loses it in a fight with local champion ‘Midas‘. When attempting to scavenge discarded parts to build a second robot, Charlie and Max discover ‘Atom‘, an obsolete robot designed to sustain extensive damage. At Max’s behest, the two protagonists take Atom to an unsanctioned outdoor match against a robot called ‘Metro’, which Atom overcomes. To improve Atom’s performance, Max persuades Charlie to train the robot via its innate powers of mimicry, producing a series of victories culminating in the conquest of secondary champion ‘Twin Cities’. Taking advantage of Atom’s notoriety, Max challenges global champion ‘Zeus’; whereupon they are attacked and robbed by Ricky and his men. Charlie returns Max to his aunt and uncle; but later retrieves him to witness the match of Zeus and Atom. During the match, Atom’s vocal receptors are damaged, and Atom instead fights by imitating Charlie while the latter shadow-boxes outside the fighters’ ring. As a result, Atom overcomes its opponent (prompting jubilation in the audience); but the judges declare Zeus the winner by reason of a larger number of blows inflicted. Meanwhile Atom receives the unofficial title of “People’s Champion”.
